Zero-Point System Selection Checklist

Fill this in per machine before choosing a zero-point interface. Most disappointing installations trace back to a question on this sheet that nobody asked early enough.

27 items

1 · The machine

  • Make, model and control

  • Table size and existing fixing pattern

  • Z travel and current clearance above the table

Every millimetre of stack height is Z travel you lose.

  • Vertical or horizontal spindle

Chip fall is different, and it changes seating-face protection.

  • Pallet changer or pallet pool fitted

  • Maximum table load, including fixture and part

2 · The work

  • Changeovers per shift on this machine

This is the number the whole business case rests on.

  • Current setup time per changeover

  • Typical part size and weight range

  • Heaviest cut expected

Determines required pull-in force and interface size.

  • Number of different fixtures to be interfaced

3 · Interface decisions

  • Base plate or direct mount into the table

  • Grid pitch chosen

Pick one pitch for the whole shop, not per machine.

  • Number of receivers per fixture

Two locate; additional ones add clamping force, not position.

  • Pneumatic or hydraulic release

  • Air supply route to the table decided

  • Seat-check (air seating) required

    Effectively mandatory for unattended running.

4 · Chips, coolant and maintenance

  • How chips will be kept off seating faces

Covers, blow-off, or a cleaning step in the changeover routine.

  • Blow-off available at the interface

  • Cleaning routine agreed with operators

Written into the changeover sheet, not left to memory.

  • Spare seals and pull studs stocked

  • Verification procedure defined

A repeatable indicator check to confirm the interface still repeats.

5 · Rollout

  • First machine chosen

Start where changeovers are most frequent, not where it is easiest.

  • Fixture conversion order decided

Convert the highest-changeover fixtures first so savings arrive early.

  • Production protected during installation

  • Baseline setup times recorded

Without a before figure you cannot prove the after figure.

  • Operator training scheduled
