But a 5-axis machining centre is one of the biggest capital purchases a shop makes, and for many parts an angle head on the 3-axis you already own reaches the same feature for a tiny fraction of the cost. This article compares the two honestly, so you spend on the one your parts actually need.

The core trade-off is capital. Adding an angle head means buying a tool, typically in the region of $8,000–10,000, that mounts in your existing spindle. Reaching the same feature with a new machine means buying a 5-axis machining centre — often several times the price of a comparable 3-axis VMC, before tooling, fixturing and training.

Specifying an angle head so it actually fits your job

  1. 1Match the shank to your spindle taper — BT30 / BT40 / BT50, or HSK / CAT.
  2. 2Choose fixed 90° for maximum rigidity, or adjustable 0–90° for varied angles.
  3. 3Size the collet (ER8–ER32) or side-lock to the cutter and torque you need.

Is an angle head cheaper than buying a 5-axis machine?+

Can an angle head reach features a 5-axis machine cannot?+
