Automotive Checking Fixtures: A GD&T-Driven Guide
What a checking fixture is, how a GD&T datum scheme drives its design, and how go/no-go, profile and CMM-ready features turn a drawing into a repeatable inspection tool.

A checking fixture (CF) recreates a part's datum reference frame so its dimensions can be verified quickly and repeatably on the shop floor. It is only as trustworthy as its datum scheme — which is why fixture design always starts from the customer's GD&T drawing. This guide explains the difference between a fixture and a gauge, how GD&T datums drive the design, and how a drawing becomes a validated inspection tool.
Checking fixture vs functional gauge
A checking fixture holds the whole part in its datum frame so many features can be checked at once — with pins, profile details and CMM reference points. A functional (attribute) gauge checks a specific feature, such as a hole position or a profile, with simple go / no-go elements. Most automotive programs use both.
GD&T datums and 3-2-1 location
Every fixture recreates the part's datum reference frame using the 3-2-1 principle — six points of contact that fully constrain the part exactly as the drawing defines it.

Calibration and GR&R
Each fixture ships with a calibration report, and where the program requires it, a Gauge R&R (GR&R) study so measurement uncertainty is understood before the tool enters production inspection. That traceability is what makes shop-floor checks defensible.
Applications: BIW to EV battery
Checking fixtures are used across body-in-white, interior, powertrain and — increasingly — EV battery trays and modules, where flatness, hole position and profile drive both fit and safety.
